This old vise is really nice. The action is as slick as any I've ever felt. It's just absolutely gorgeous all over, inside and out. Let me tell you a little about the vise in general and then what I know about this particular unit. The patented date comes up via searching as August 16. 1938. It was issued to the Reed Manufacturing Company in Eerie PA. The patent was applied for on January 14, 1936. Reed was the manufacturer and Craftsman sold it under their name. Craftsman has rebranded the vises they sell for as long as they've been selling vises, they are not a manufacturer but a reseller. The model is No. 5184 and the patent is No. 2127008. When closed 7 1/2" Tall overall Weight is 29 Pounds Now. About this particular vise up for auction here; When I got it the tool was a real mess. Spider nests, dust balls, dirt. just scuz everywhere. It wasn't pretty to say the least. I took it home and gave it a bath to see what I was working with. Then I completely disassembled every part and cleaned each one in great detail. The exposed metal parts were cleaned using electrolysis. Electrical current flowing through a neutral/base liquid solution. Everything was scrubbed down using warm soapy water and then dried with air. At this point I was able to give it a good inspection and I liked what I found. What I saw was no damage anywhere and in excellent shape. Yes. There is some light surface marks here and there from use but structurally it's 100% sound. The jaws are just in terrific condition, they look as if they've only seen light use. While clearly being a vise that saw work, is still in fantastic condition. The action is slippery smooth and the jaws meet up squarely. I found it very impressive that the splitter/chisel hardie has remained with this vise through its nearly century long journey. Do you how many early 20th century vises I've seen with the original hardie before? Absolutely zero. I'm just stunned it's still present and in really nice condition as well. The patent date stamped into the side of the slide is March 14. 1933 I repeat the same restoration procedure pretty much every vise auction I post but nothing in my methods really changes. I painted ... more it with a color called Deep Metallic Cobalt Blue and it's very handsome to me. I did bake the paint on and I believe it should hold up decently. The photos are pretty close but it may seem a tad darker in person. No paint was applied to any friction surface. All threads were cleaned and chased. This vise is 100% and ready for a long life of work holding. I did not apply any lubricant to this vise. If you don't agree with me here just let me know and I'll be happy to put some synthetic grease on the main-screw before I ship it. First off. The action is very nice on this vise and you won't notice the grease being gone. The reason I don't like to add grease is here is because of this style vise. It's called an exposed screw vise. That means you can see the main screw because it isn't located within a hollow slide. With the screw out in the open and greased it will catch and hold every piece of dust, metal shaving and dirt that comes its way. That will soon lead to worn threads and stubborn action. I recommend just blowing off the screw every once in a while and you won't ever see any trouble. The Craftsman vice is in working order and has a quick release feature which also works well. the main issue is the end of the oak wood handle was cracked and the previous owner applied tape to hold it together. It still holds. The clamps are 7" across and one side was protected with wood while the other side was left to plain metal. Could use some grease or oil to properly use the item. It opens and closes with no issues but grease would make the item spin out of control[ joke] priced to sell and the freight is on me. I use FedEx ground so a post office box will not work. This one is dated November, 1953 so it's just over 60 years old. This is the big one, with 4 1/2" jaws, gigantic swivel base and it weighs nearly 77 pounds. The starting bid is just $0.99 but the real price of admission is the shipping fee. You can read more about this below but just keep in mind; this is one large and very heavy vise. But there's just no doubt it's one of the coolest vises ever manufactured. If any vise can have an"it" factor then this is the one. When I brought it home the vise had obviously been sitting for quite a long time. It was covered in layers of things I don't think I wanted to recognize. That's why the first couple of hours were spent scrubbing and scrubbing and scrubbing in a warm, soapy bath. ... more My arms hurt when I was done cleaning it. There wasn't much original finish left but what little bit remained was removed with gel stripper. I used a combination of wire brushes, Simple Green and a little media blasting to strip it down to bare metal. It was then I could begin with the refinishing. If you've ever looked at any my auctions before then this is going to be old news for you because I pretty much do everything the same way on every vise. I clean and mend all the hardware. Make it as new looking as I can and also to be certain it all works as it should. The surface-prepped cast iron pieces are warmed to 200 ° and three coats of enamel are applied. Each application is baked for 30 minutes at 200° as well. I do get reports back that this is a reasonably durable finish and my personal vise still looks fine as well. I trust the system. On this vise I used Satin Midnight Blue for the color. Then it all goes back together with synthetic lubricant on the action parts. This all works well so I do it time and time again.
